Senior Wellness: How Residents of Our Community Stay Young at Heart, Mind and Spirit

| Health & Wellness, John Knox News, Living at John Knox

Tai chi, salsa dancing, water aerobics—whoever said senior fitness had to be tedious or boring hasn’t seen the residents at John Knox Village of Central Florida in action. Here, folks are never at a loss for ways to boost their energy and wellness. The real challenge is deciding which programs and activities to choose from every day.

Our wellness team understands how exercise, learning and social interactions enhance seniors’ overall quality of life. As we prepare to turn the page on another year, we thought we’d share some of the ways residents and staff at our Central Florida senior living community live their happiest, healthiest lives.

Physical Wellness in Seniors: Getting Stronger Every Day

When January rolls around, two words are at the top of many New Year’s resolution lists: Exercise more. Seniors are no different. After months of indulging in gift basket goodies and cookie exchanges, people of all ages are committed to getting off the couch and back on track.

In addition to strengthening muscles, exercise—even moderate amounts—has been found to help boost mental clarity in seniors, increase energy and promote a good night’s sleep. Studies also show that older adults who exercise regularly experience fewer feelings of social isolation.

At John Knox Village, there’s no shortage of exercise programs for seniors wanting to look good and feel great. Folks here take advantage of unlimited access to on-site state-of-the-art fitness centers, participate in individual or group workouts, learn new dance moves, do water aerobics in our aquatic center, practice their serves on our tennis and pickleball courts, perfect their golf swing at our outdoor sports complex, enjoy a friendly game of shuffleboard or bocce ball and so much more.

Cognitive Wellness in Seniors: Learning That Never Ends

When it comes to warding off age-related health issues and improving overall wellness in seniors, keeping a strong mind can be just as important as maintaining a sound body. From taking part in workshops, lectures and classes to discovering new games and interests, John Knox Village residents keep their minds sharp and their hearts full.

On any given day, you can see neighbors and friends playing poker, bridge, cribbage, pinochle and mahjong with new activities being added all the time. If no group or club interests you, you can start a new one—in fact, many of our most popular clubs and activities began with an idea from a resident.

There’s always something to do off campus as well. Just a short trip outside our community, you’ll find theaters, museums, historical sites and opportunities to take classes or attend lectures at nearby colleges.

Spiritual Wellness in SeniorsFinding Meaning and Purpose

Spiritual wellness is about building meaningful connections and a sense of belonging that are essential to overall health and quality of life. Having a strong sense of faith and purpose helps residents navigate the changes and losses we all face as we age.

As a nondenominational senior living community, John Knox Village offers Vespers programs and events that are open to everyone. Our full-time chaplain supports all residents, and they are welcome to join our spiritual life council or visit our spiritual life library. In addition, our events coordinator and life enrichment staff organize a full calendar of entertainment, cultural, educational and spiritual activities.

For residents who want to reflect or meditate, our outdoor gardens provide a peaceful environment. And volunteer opportunities abound both on- and off-campus.
